De Brazza Monkey EEP

The De Brazza Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) is a guenon found in swamps, bamboo and mountain forests of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guineau, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda making it one of the most widespread African primates. In the wild De Brazza Monkeys live in groups of 5–30 animals.

I am the EEP co-ordinator for this species. De Brazza monkeys have been managed as an ESB programme in European Zoos for many years but the programme was upgraded to an EEP in 2014.

The programme has been proactively managed, with new contraception guidelines issued by the EAZA Group on Zoo Animal Contraception (EGZAC) and breeding recommendations issued. Bachelor groups have been established and a number of new breeding groups have been formed.

Traditionally guenons have been kept in pairs in zoos, however I hope to encourage management of the species that more reflects the social group structure in the wild creating larger groups with multiple breeding females and retaining youngsters in the group until they are at least 4 years of age and have experienced rearing of youngsters.
